I know it's not Easter, but this is the text for this week. John 20, the account of the empty tomb.
What a perfect week for Highroad to hear this message, on Ride Reveal Weekend!
This is the message of why we do what we do. Our ministry is to reach those far from God, specifically the surrounding riding community, with the Good News that Jesus has paid the price for our choosing to live apart from God. The message, that we are sinners, God loves us, and that God sent His only Son to be sacrificed by a horrific torture and ultimate death so that we can choose to accept that as His gift and to follow Him, will give us the unmerited gift of eternal life with our Father.
But the story does not end there.
As the text this week explains, Jesus rose from the dead.
Is it necessary for us to believe in the resurrection if we follow Christ? Raising from the dead after three days, wrapped in 75 - 100 pounds of burial spices, is probably not likely. Do we have to tell people we really believe that?
Do you believe that putting oil in your bike is necessary to go on a ride around the Great Lakes? You put gas in it and riding is fun. Do I have to believe that oil is going to make a difference? Ya better! Or half way down the road you will need a new bike!
Paul writes in 1st Corinthians 15 of the importance of this belief. "And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith." He goes on to say, "And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins."
And speaking for myself, if Christ has not been raised; Highroad Riders is just a bunch of great people who have great rides and a great community to belong to. But at the end of the ride, our preaching is useless, our faith is futile, and we still will stand before a Holy God with with nothing but a pile of filthy rags we call "good works."
So yes, this week’s message is a perfect reminder of why we do what we do.
