Have you ever Double Doinked
We all know how this kick ended!
On the way up, hits the upright. On the way down hits the crossbar
Now known as the "Double Doink"
Field goal kickers have one job, kick an itty bitty football through a big target from anywhere between 20 - 60 yards away with close to 2 tons of human flesh trying to stop you. Sounds simple, right?
The 1st humans had one job, live in a relationship designed just for them with the God of the universe. Their one job, don't eat the fruit from a couple of trees. Sounds simple, right?
Our beloved Chicago Bear field kicker (and Christian brother) Cody Parkey missed the target after his kick was tipped off a piece of the the 2 tons of flesh bearing down on him. He now has to live with missing the target. The other field goals he made to keep us in the game are long forgotten. The missed kick looms over his life.
We remember Adam and Eve for one thing, eating the forbidden fruit. That looms over all humanity.
Cody was booed off the field and initially the brunt of much anger for missing the target.
How often have I been angry for God for allowing Adam and Eve to miss the mark and allow sin in the world.
Support from all around the sporting world came in for Cody. Though hurt, many of Cody's teammates also understood they could have done more to not put him in that spot. Kobe Bryant encouraged Parkey to "grind harder and double down" heading into next season.
God knew we would not be able to grind harder and double down no matter how much support we had! So, because of HIs great love for us, He sent a His Son to give us the opportunity to get back in the game.
At this point we don't know the fate of Cody as a result of all his doinks (Don't for get the Quad Doink against Detroit)
But let us remember that Cody's doinks are a very clear metaphor that we all doink.. we all miss the mark... we all sin.
Jesus Christ forgives our doinks, and He is our God who also is our Coach. He has placed other doinkers around us to also be supportive, not of our doinks, but to help us to remember that He has won the game and to press on to live in a friendship with Him that Adam and Eve once had.
Before they Doinked!
We are a body of many parts, but diversity alone does not guarantee that all those parts will work together. True community requires diversity, humility, empathy, and… most of all… love. Love is the rebar in the concrete of community, the undergirding for all of it. And without love, well, we’re nothing but clanging and chaos. Will we let love come alive among us?
1 Corinthians 12:27-13:3
Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? But earnestly desire the greater gifts.
And I show you a still more excellent way.
If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body [d]to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
